Finally, this website brings it all together: The Kerri-Lee Mayland Company
ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR REQUESTS IN 2021 WAS FOR A HOME OFFICE REFRESH.
Either because people found themselves suddenly working remotely for the first time in their careers, and the dining room table wasn't going to cut it.
Or-- they had a home office that was underwhelming both in design and function and definitely not "Zoom" worthy.
I found myself in need of a private workspace at my home too, as life became mostly virtual in the early months of the pandemic. So, I converted a small walk in closet into a "Zoom Room." I cleared out the clothes and shoes, and made it into a cozy but functional workspace. I created a small desk using an extra shelf from a pine hutch I no longer needed. I added a ghost chair, put some millwork on the ceiling and walls, and voila! I can tune out the whole world just by closing the door and focusing on whatever I have on my screen.
Another office we did, was a little attic room used mostly for guests in its previous life, but with fewer guests visiting in the pandemic, and more working from home-- Liz was ready to create a space that felt comfy yet productive. She wanted her kids to be able to come up and do their homework while she was working, but she always wanted it to be stylish and stately, and ready for virtual team meetings.
Here's what the attic looked like before and after:
Liz loves color which made this office super fun to do. She had painted the lower parts of the walls blue, but I told her, "We need to keep on going!"
Lam from Kell Modern and I collaborated and Liz now has an office that she loves, AND that works for her many work-from-home needs.
Lam and I also teamed up for Kitty's built in.
With COVID requiring kids to alternate back and forth between remote learning and in-class learning, having a designated place at home to study, is helpful.
This is a built-in with room to grow. Kitty can replace her peel and stick wallpaper with another pattern or paint the wall behind the desk in whatever color she is vibing. Eventually she will probably want to put up a TV for Netflix watching and/or YouTube or Tik Tok screen mirroring, but at least the option is there.
The styling reflects her life today, but the shelving can change as Kitty does. Let's hope lots of A's come out of this remote learning nook!
Another Kell Modern collab was for Heather's bold and chic home office.
Lam and I wanted to make her office feel like "her," and make it a place she would want to be.
Because Heather has a lot of international clients in different time zones, she had to be ready to go at all hours of the day. We considered that with lighting and kept the blinds she already had in place so that the natural light could be blocked out when needed to avoid screen glare. She also wanted to make a bold statement, that matched the recent REFRESH we did in the rest of her home. We created a simple backdrop of black and white, and then added pops of color in each room so you can see how that matches up with her office now, too.
Lam spent a ton of time figuring out how to hide the many wires an office takes, while hiding the printer and all the "command central" stuff that comes along with routers and office gear. Plus-- he built in her new picture TV screen, so it blends beautifully with its new surroundings.
REFRESHes don't have to be major makeovers, just styling new pieces can make your existing space feel brand new! That was the case for Lori's remote teaching room. We gave her some guidance, came up with pieces she loved, and she put it together herself! Sometimes that's all our clients need ;)
Take a peek at the BEFORE and AFTER!
Lori is a client we have done other rooms for, and when she asked us to freshen up the office she was spending hours, teaching in, we said of course! We didn't change the floor plan, or any of the major pieces inside, we just found her pieces to update the ones she already had. She styled it herself, and sent us these before and after pictures! Sometimes that's all clients need, just a little guidance. Lori now loves her space again ;)
Other times however, we completely reinvent the wheel and that is exactly what happened in this shore office. It WAS an unusable cramped attic!
Lam and I did another collab for this one, and he completely knocked it out of the park! Scroll through this insta post to see pictures and video of the AFTER.
Isn't it astounding to see the complete transformation? How it ended up feeling so much bigger is beyond me... it's like the space grew, even though we put more in it! In case you're wondering about that opening in the floor-- there is a custom cover that is put over top when the office is being used, and left off, when it's empty. A ladder is attached so the office can easily be accessed.
SO! What do you think the most popular request will be in 2022?
****Leave me some of your guesses in the comments****
Let's hope the pandemic doesn't have us retreating into home study/work spaces again, but if it does, maybe these REFRESHes will give you some inspiration.
HAPPY NEW YEAR friends!
