Christmas doesn't have to be merry and bright. It can be calm and serene, and embrace the beauty and simplicity of nature, too.

That's the kind of holiday season that seemed to agree with me most this year, and perhaps that is a direct result of the continual glitter bath I have been taking since the week before Thanksgiving.

Let me be clear, there is no Bah Humbug here!

None at all, I cherish everything about this time of year. I have just been decorating so much for clients that I have felt the need to come home to the clean scent of basic balsam fir and pine boughs, with soft white lights adorning natural green hues.

And that's it.

I feel like I am celebrating Saint Lucia along with my regular holiday traditions, and I'm totally here for it. If you don't know what that is, it's a Swedish celebration on the longest day of darkness, December 13th. There is angelic singing, candles everywhere, including a candle crown, white nightgowns, and prayers for light and love for the world.

Meantime, at my house, I have gone simple and green and twinkle light white as you can see above.

This is a bit of a departure from recent years when I went wild with buffalo check in the traditional "Canadian plaid" colors of red and black. It was a "go big or go home" vibe for sure, complete with a 20 foot tall tree in our entryway with scattered nutcrackers at the base, and a good old fashioned Christmas mailbox garland.

It's amazing and super holiday centric, but that was then, and this is now. I needed simple this year, and to enjoy nature in all it's glory. We change over the years and so does our taste and our decor, and that's one of the best parts of decorating. Our wall papers and paint colors don't have to be a forever thing. Our preferences are constantly evolving. Thank goodness, right? We have the freedom to change our minds, and our styles!

Back to Christmas.

If you are wanting to enjoy a natural Christmas too, here are some ideas.

  • Don't take all the ornament boxes out of the garage or attic, leave some there and work with just a few.

  • Opt for whites and silvers and golds-- leave the reds and greens out until next year?

  • Change it up if things are feeling a bit "close," and you're panicking about all that clutter around your home. Keep it minimalistic.

  • But if you're a "Traditionalist," ignore the above points and GO ALL OUT!

Let's face it. You can put almost anything on a tree, add some strands of twinkles, dim the lights for that magical warm glow we all crave this time of year, and the holiday season is on, in all it's glory!

Merry Everything friends.

Let's love, light, twinkle, and glow!

I can smell the pine just looking at these photos! I’m also totally here for the simple green, white and warm twinkly lights this year. There’s something so calm about it!

After the amount of Christmas we have just endured (happily!) it's nice to balance it all out... for every Nutcracker, we can trade it in for a pine bough or garland. White twinkly lights for the win!!

Feeling green on thé inside but went more traditional outside my home with reds golds silvers and greens on the garlands. Pretty when the snow falls on them 😉
